This is why you are unable to start blogging

Reasons that kept you from starting a blog and how to overcome them

I have wanted to write ever since I was a kid. I had no trouble writing book reviews and posting them on Goodreads . However, when it came to technical blogging, few reasons kept me from writing. Thanks to Hashnode bootcamp, I have promised myself that I will start technical writing and you should too.

Reasons that kept you and I from starting a technical blog :

☆ You don't have confidence in your writing skills.

You don’t have to be an excellent writer to be a blogger. People don't read websites and blog posts like they read novels or other pieces of literature. You are all set as long as you deliver information that's either helpful or just resonate with the readers. Do you really care how eloquent your personal diary is? Just write your heart out.

☆ You are stuck in a perfectionism-procrastination loop.

Have you ever delayed starting a task because you are terrified of making a mistake when doing the 'perfect' work? Now, when the deadline approaches, you have no option other than to rush and do things at the last minute. I admit there is some drama (mostly curiosity) and thrill involved in that but it always amounts to dissatisfaction. Good luck : you are not lazy because this kind of procrastination is fueled by perfectionism.

Other indications that you are this person:

  • You device plans, create time tables, charts and workflows but never do the actual work because you are too intimidated by the failure to follow the plan.

  • Following the first sign, you are likely to do less intimidating tasks like clean your desk, watch a documentary and practice the same old song on your guitar - you know what you do.

Be less self critical and get out of your safe mode (procrastination).

☆ You don't know what to write.

You really have no idea what to write. This is comparatively an easier problem to solve. Read : Chris Bonger's “Learn how to come up with article ideas and stay consistent.”

☆ You have too many ideas but not enough focus.

This is called too many ideas syndrome (TMIS). You find yourself with many ideas for blogs, taglines, article topics but with no clear direction or focus. It causes anxiety, indecision, procrastination which finally makes you fail to meet deadlines. To overcome TMIS :

  • Set early deadlines or reduce the amount of time you have for writing.

Parkinson's law: work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.

Therefore, less time means less time wasted on less important ideas.

"Think of your ideas like pots on the stove in the kitchen of your creative mind. Lift the lid and look inside. One of them is always closest to being soup. Write that one first." - Cynthia Whitcomb

  • Organizing your ideas will do great wonders.

☆ Lack of time.

Prioritize and plan accordingly. Decide if you want to write blogs daily / weekly / monthly based on your schedule.

☆ You aren't sure which platform to choose.

☆ "Why should I write when someone else has written it better?"

This is your insecurity acting up. To be wise and old, you must first be young and stupid. Remember you are writing not to be the best but to do the best you can, add value to your resume, build your online presence and discover the community you belong to.

Now that you know what kept you from writing and how to overcome it, start writing!
